Illinois Window Tint Laws

How dark you can legally tint your windows in Illinois, explained by a Chicago tint shop: limits for sedans, SUVs and trucks, what 35% looks like, and how to stay legal.

Window tint percentages chart showing 70%, 50%, 35%, 20%, 15% and 5% shades from lightest to darkest
VLT is the percentage of light the glass lets through. Lower numbers are darker.

Illinois tint limits at a glance

Illinois sets different limits for regular passenger cars (sedans, coupes, hatchbacks) and for multipurpose vehicles like SUVs, vans and pickup trucks. Here's how it breaks down for aftermarket film.

WindowSedans & coupesSUVs, vans & trucks
WindshieldNon-reflective strip on the top 6 inches onlyNon-reflective strip on the top 6 inches only
Front side windows35% VLT or lighter50% VLT or lighter
Rear side windows35% VLT or lighterAny darkness
Back window35% VLT or lighterAny darkness

Mirror-like reflective film isn't allowed, and red or amber tint isn't permitted. If your back window is tinted, your vehicle needs working side mirrors on both sides.

What 35% actually looks like

35% is the classic "clean but noticeable" look. You can see that the car is tinted, it cuts glare and heat, and you can still see out clearly at night. For a sedan, 35% all around keeps everything legal and looks even from every angle. Many drivers are surprised how good it looks; it's darker than factory glass without the blacked-out look of 5% limo tint.

Why SUVs can go darker in the back

Most SUVs, trucks and vans already come from the factory with dark privacy glass behind the front doors. That factory glass is built into the window, not a film, and it's legal. Illinois lets these vehicles go as dark as you want on the rear side and back windows, but the front doors need to stay at 50% or lighter. That's why "front two windows" is one of our most common SUV jobs: matching the front doors to a legal shade so the car looks finished.

Factory tint vs. aftermarket film

Your car's factory tint counts toward the total. If your front windows already have a light factory tint and we add film on top, the combined result is what gets measured. We meter your glass before we recommend a shade, so the final number lands where you want it.

Medical exemptions

Drivers with certain medical conditions, such as light sensitivity, may qualify for darker tint. It requires a physician's statement and an approved certification through the Illinois Secretary of State, which you keep in the vehicle. Bring your approval when you book and we'll install to match it.

What happens if your tint is too dark?

Tint that's darker than the limits can get you pulled over and ticketed, and you may be required to remove the film. If you already have tint that's too dark, our tint removal and re-tint service strips it cleanly and replaces it with a legal shade.

Laws can change, and the details depend on your exact vehicle. We'll confirm what's legal for your car before we install anything. This page is general information, not legal advice; for the official text, see the Illinois Vehicle Code, 625 ILCS 5/12-503.

FAQ

Tint law questions

What is the darkest legal tint in Illinois?

For sedans, 35% VLT is the darkest legal shade on the side and back windows. SUVs, vans and trucks can go as dark as you want on the rear side and back windows, but the front side windows must stay at 50% or lighter.

Is 20% tint legal in Illinois?

Not on a sedan's side or back windows, which must be 35% or lighter. On an SUV, van or truck, 20% is allowed on the rear side and back windows, but not on the front doors.

Is 5% limo tint legal in Illinois?

Only on the rear side and back windows of SUVs, vans and trucks. It isn't legal on any sedan window or on any vehicle's front side windows.

Can I tint my windshield in Illinois?

Only a non-reflective strip across the top 6 inches. The rest of the windshield must stay clear.

Do you make sure my tint is legal?

Yes. We meter your glass, account for any factory tint, and walk you through what's legal for your vehicle before we install anything.
